Cornus mas

Landscaping Value: This is the earliest blooming of all dogwoods.  Clusters of dainty, yellow flowers accentuate the overall delicate effect of this tree.  Autumn leaf color is enhanced by clusters of small, scarlet berries, which can be used for preserves or left for the birds.

Leaves:
Opposite, simple, ovate to elliptic, 2-4” long, ¾ to 1½” wide.
Flower:
  Small, yellow, 1/6” diameter appearing before leaves.  Flowers are enclosed in four downy, boat-shaped bracts.
Conditions:
Sun or partial shade.  Prefers rich, well drained soil but adaptable to different soils.  Tolerates alkaline soil.
Disease/pests: 
Very pest free.
Bloom Period:
February-March
Natural Range:
Central and Southern Europe, West Asia.
Hardiness:
USDA zones 4-8.
