Corylopsis pauciflora

Landscaping Value:  A graceful, vase shaped shrub having a delicate branching pattern.  Fragrant, flowers appear on slender twigs before the leaves in earliest spring.  C. pauciflora has a more refined appearance than other bolder species.

 Loop trail outside Yao Garden and in perennial bed east side.
Plant type: Deciduous shrub.
Family: Hamamelidaceae
Height/Spread:: 8-10 ft. tall, spreads as wide, slow grower
Leaves: 
Alternate, simple, ovate to broadly ovate, 11/2 to 3” long, 1-2” wide with deep veins
Flower: 
Two, sometimes five primrose yellow flowers, ¾” diameter, on short drooping inflorescence appearing before the leaves.
Height/spread:
8-10 ft. tall, spreads as wide, slow grower
Disease/pests: 
Free of significant problems.
Bloom Period: February-March
Conditions: Needs protection from wind, full sun and high pH soils.  Best suited to a woodland setting.
Natural Range:
 
Japan and Taiwan
Hardiness:  USDA zones 6-8
