Pulsatilla vulgaris

Extra notes and interesting information:

Usually grows in sparely wooded pine forests or meadows, often on a sunny sloping side with calcium rich soil.  Often will one of the first plants to bloom in the spring, often before late winter snows have gone.  
The pasque flower is the official state flower of South Dakota and the provincial flower of Manitoba. 
Some excitement that it may be a highly effective treatment for the MRSA superbug according to an article in the Irish Examiner in November of 2007

Common Name:  Pasque Flower, Common Pasque flower, Dane’s Blood

Plant type: Perennial, becomes dormant in summer
Family:
Ranunculaceae
Height/Spread: Height,

less than 12 inches, typically up to 6”; spread 1-2 feet.

Leaves:  Tomentum, finely cut gray-green leaves with silky hairs.
Flowers:
Cup-shaped; starts erect, then nods.  Flower colors: pink, red, purple, white.  Petals enclose mass of yellow stamens.

Bloom Time: March, April, May
Growing Conditions: 
Regular moisture, full sun, well-drained soil.
Diseases/pests:

Natural Range:  Native to western, central and southern Europe.

Hardiness: USDA zones 5, not frost tender.
