Cotinus 'Grace'

Other cultivars/species: 

Cotinus 'Flame' is another hybrid of the same parents. Cotinus coggygria 'Ancot',  Golden Spirit Smoke Tree, has white flowers and fall color is coral to orange. Coggygria 'Nordine' is very hardy and has red smoke blooms and red foliage.

Cotinus 'Grace' is a hybrid between American smoke tree (Cotinus obovatus) and the European smoke tree (Cotinus coggygria )

Cotinus is from the Greek word 'kotinus' meaning wild olive.

Awarded Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit.

Common Name: Purple Smoke Tree
Plant Type: Large Shrub or Small Tree
Family: Anacardiaceae
Height/Spread: 10- 15 feet high by 10-15 feet wide

Bark/Stem: Bark unremarkable
Leaves: Spring: Iridescent green overlaid with red and light red. Summer: Darkens to dark red Autumn mosaic of red and orange to gold.
Flowers: Enormous clusters of frothy pink panicles 14-in high to 12-in wide.

Fruit: Small, hard, less than half inch in diameter drupe* with a single seed.
Bloom Time: Early summer.
Growing Conditions:
Needs full sun to flower and produce good leaf color. Grows well in various well-drained soils, needs average fertility. Needs medium moisture to drought tolerant.

Diseases/Pests: Mostly disease free. Some verticillium** wilt and powdery mildew. Verticillium can kill it.
Natural Range: Native to temperate northern hemisphere Southern US and Europe Mediterranean to China.

Uses: Beds and borders, specimen plant or focal Point.
Winter/Fall Interest: Tree structure.

Hardiness:
USDA Zones 5 to 9.
Garden Location: Groundcover Bed 14.

 

* A drupe is a fruit in which an outer fleshy part surrounds a shell (pit) of hardened endocarp, with a seed inside. Other fruit with drupes are olive, date palm, pistachio, prunes.

** Verticillium wilt is caused by soil borne fungi, Verticillium albo-atrum and Verticiliium dahliae, and most commonly attacks woody ornamentals in the US.
